Cawker City, Kansas, claims to be home to one of the oddest roadside attractions in the country: a mammoth ball of twine. It all began with a farmer named Frank Stoeber who, in 1953, began wrapping discarded sisal twine (left over from binding corn fields) around an existing ball.

By 1957, the ball had grown to 5,000 pounds. Farmer Stoeber continued the work until his death in 1974, when the duty was passed on to the local townspeople. In August of each year, the town celebrates a “Twine-A-Thon” where people have added so much twine that the ball now weighs almost 27,000 pounds. It is still growing.
