12 principles people say ABC ignored when they suspended Jimmy Kimmel

Suspension of the Jimmy Kimmel Show last week took everyone by surprise. Some applauded ABC for the suspension, whereas others were more alarmed at what this action meant for the way broadcasting networks would deal with such issues.

So we surveyed some people to find out what they think about ABC and other broadcasters suspending Jimmy Kimmel after he made controversial remarks. The following are the 12 principles people say were broken, and why they feel Jimmy Kimmel’s show suspension hit so close to home.

Be clear about the rules

Most people we surveyed say that they would have been more sympathetic to Jimmy Kimmel’s show suspension if there was a specific rule on the books that Kimmel broke. Instead, the network cited general terms like “offensive” and “inappropriate” without defining what they mean.

Treat everyone the same

People we surveyed noted that several TV hosts in the past have made controversial and more offensive statements about other issues. But they were not suspended, so why Jimmy Kimmel? By singling him out, the networks have applied the rules unevenly.

Keep politics out of programming decisions

Survey responses showed participants believed networks should prioritize their audiences’ interests instead of accommodating regulators or political figures. They think that is exactly what happened in this case, and it undermines the public’s trust.

Focus on viewers’ interests

Broadcasters are supposed to work in the public interest. In the view of many people we surveyed, ABC made a decision to protect itself or avoid getting in trouble. But it did not consider the interests of the viewers who watch the network every day.

Keep standards consistent across the industry

People noticed how quickly other networks and local stations followed ABC’s lead by pulling Kimmel’s show too. This made it seem like a chain reaction with no clear standard guiding it, which felt unfair and chaotic.

No hidden pressure

The respondents thought that the decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel was not solely ABC’s decision. There was political pressure on the broadcaster to suspend the TV host. From their point of view, this is censorship that is being implemented through intermediaries.

Free speech should be respected

Many people felt uncomfortable with Kimmel’s remarks but still believed his freedom to express his opinion should remain intact. These people also believe that this incident set a precedent. The move established free speech as a conditional privilege that the government can withdraw when its expression becomes politically inconvenient.

Stay within proper limits

Some mentioned that the FCC and other regulatory agencies should stay within their mandate of solving technical problems and issues of decency. The FCC has no business getting into areas of political commentary and speech.

Be honest and transparent

n our survey, many people said that what most upset them was that ABC just made an announcement and pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s show. This was done without explanation and in a very abrupt and secretive manner that spawned rumors and even greater mistrust.

Don’t create fear among other hosts

Several of our survey respondents are also concerned about what Jimmy Kimmel’s show suspension means for other presenters, comedians, and entertainment commentators. If it can happen this easily to one person, others will be more careful what they say and hold back their opinions, which is not good for viewers who want to see honest and diverse content.

Give people a fair process

Many survey participants felt Kimmel and his team deserved a chance to speak before being pulled off the air. The suspension came so suddenly that it felt more like a snap judgment than a thoughtful decision. Without a way to respond or appeal, the whole process seemed rushed, one-sided, and unfair.

Consider the whole team

Some respondents stressed that it wasn’t just about Kimmel or ABC’s image. An entire team, including writers, producers, camera crew, and stagehands, saw their work vanish in a single night. Many felt the decision overlooked the everyday people whose paychecks and stability were tied to the show,
