Everyone loves a good decluttering session. It feels satisfying to box things up and drop them off at the donation center. But later on, regret has a funny way of creeping in. We talked to some people about the items they wish they’d kept, and the same kinds of things kept coming up. Here are 12 household items people often regret giving away.

Old photos and albums

In the rush to declutter, some people toss boxes of old pictures without realizing their importance. The value of those irreplaceable family memories really sinks in once they’re gone. Sentimental items are always the hardest to let go.
Favorite books

That stack of “extra” books seems like an easy donation. But weeks later, when they want to reread a favorite, it’s gone. A library card doesn’t always make up for a lost collection.
Musical instruments

Unused guitars, ukuleles, and pianos can sit around taking up space until someone in the family gets interested in them. A musical instrument is not a cheap thing to purchase and many people later regret donating them.
Vintage furniture

Whether a funky old chair or retro tabletop, certain items end up in a donation pile because they’re out of style. Time passes and they realize it was actually a vintage collectible. Antiques are hard to replace and once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Kitchen appliances

Whether it’s a mixer, a blender, a bread machine, or even a waffle iron, there are many things people love to donate in the kitchen. A few months later, though, a recipe calls for that very appliance. You end up spending way more to buy a new one than you would’ve by simply storing the old.
Jewelry and watches

Pieces that seem out of style often end up in donation boxes. Later, when trends cycle back, people realize they gave away something they could’ve worn again or passed down.
Baby gear

Cribs, strollers, and toys can end up in the donation pile because they are just taking up space. The only problem is that once there is a new baby in the family, that donation is suddenly very much missed. Buying these items new is never cheap either.
Holiday decorations

In the moment, it feels smart to simplify and let go of extra holiday clutter. Then December rolls around, and the house feels empty without the old ornaments and lights. Many wish they’d held on to just a few more pieces.
Tools

That old drill or set of wrenches seems unnecessary until something breaks at home. Borrowing or replacing tools ends up being more of a hassle than keeping them in the garage.
Collectibles

Trading cards, figurines, or limited-edition items can seem like junk when boxed up, but down the line, they end up being extremely valuable or simply have an intense wave of nostalgia attached to them. When that realization hits, the regret is strong.
Workout equipment

Treadmills, bikes, or dumbbells are common donation items when people stop using them. Later, they regret it when they want to start exercising again, especially after seeing the high prices of new gear.
Family heirlooms

Sometimes heirlooms are donated without the family member realizing their history. Whether a quilt, an antique chair, or even a set of dishware, that history is lost once the item has been given away.
