12 end time Bible prophecies that confuse many people

We have been conditioned to believe there will be one antichrist, one great battle, and all take place over seven hours. If you pick up the Bible you will see this is not the case.

Many of the prophecies are very scattered, repetitive, and hidden in obscure areas of the Bible. Rather than laying out a chronological timeline for us to follow, Scripture presents us with a jigsaw puzzle.

Here are twelve of those end-times prophecies: real, scripture-based, and frequently misunderstood.

Knowledge increasing, but wisdom not mentioned

One of the eeriest verses in the Book of Daniel comes towards the end of his prophecy about the apocalypse. Daniel writes, cryptically, “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase” (Daniel 12:4).

Knowledge increasing doesn’t sound too bad to most. But, actually, Daniel is painting a grim picture here. When people travel freely throughout the whole earth and knowledge increases, it will be panic-stricken knowledge.

Imagine living in a world where everyone is frazzled from running around and knowing all of these facts and figures about this world yet no one has peace and no one knows how to live. The increase in knowledge mentioned stands for this concept. People will not be wise, they will be weary.

The resurrection order that doesn’t line up neatly

Books like Daniel and John  tempt us to think of the end of this world as quite straightforward: the graves bursting open, everyone rising to judgment all at once.

But Revelation teaches us that the apocalypse will actually take a long time. Rather than one big resurrection of the dead, there will be two separate resurrections.

Some dead people will be resurrected to reign with Christ for a thousand years, while the rest remain dead until the thousand years are completed. The movement of God’s people into the next world won’t happen with one big pop.

People begging for mountains to fall on them

Revelation 6:16 says that when the “Sixth Seal” is opened at the apocalypse, instead of fleeing to underground bunkers or crying out for God’s mercy, powerful world leaders and wealthy people will fall on their knees.

They will cry out, asking the mountains to fall on top of them and kill them. It’s not pain that terrifies these people; it’s shame. They’d rather be crushed to death by thousands of tons of rock than look God in the eyes.

The gospel reaching the whole world

Jesus said in Matthew 24: 14 that the end would not come until the gospel is preached to all nations.  When people hear that verse, they often think that it means all 195 countries listed on a world map. But “nation” in the original Greek speaks of ethnicities and tribes.

The planet hosts more than 17,000 different ethnic groups, each with their own unique language systems. This means the countdown to the apocalypse isn’t about crossing off countries, but about reaching every specific culture on earth.

A kingdom that arrives in secret

It would be difficult to date the end of the world with this prophecy in mind. Jesus taught that God’s kingdom would not come with fanfare or dramatic physical phenomena visible to everyone. He said it is “within you”, or “in your midst”.

So perhaps, the apocalypse is not necessarily a cataclysmic boom at history’s close, but perhaps a spiritual shift occurring all around us. Though we hope and pray for that final day, it could very well have been secretly intersecting with mankind for the past two millennia.

A mysterious force holding back chaos

In 2 Thessalonians 2: 6–7, Paul tells us that something is presently restraining Satan’s ability to unleash the Antichrist and complete lawlessness into the world. It’s kind of weird because he sometimes refers to it as a “thing” and other times as a “person.”

His readers at the time knew exactly what he was talking about, but to us it’s an enormous mystery. Is it the Holy Spirit? Is it a human government or an angel like Michael?

The message here is that our world is only functioning normally because there is an unseen hand preventing a tidal wave of evil that is about to break loose. The true apocalypse starts as soon as this restraining power gets removed.

Babylon: A city and a mindset

In Revelation, Babylon is portrayed like an actual city, complete with gold, silk garments and spices. It’s also depicted as a literal woman as well as a spiritual system.

But one of the reasons this prophecy confuses us is because Babylon isn’t one place on a map. Babylon is a global system of greed and decadence. Babylon defines any society that amasses riches at the expense of the poor.

The End comes when this entire global system of oppression grinds to a halt. That is why this is scary. Because the evil of the apocalypse isn’t waiting for us overseas. It’s lurking beneath the shiny, comfortable systems we use daily.

The Son not knowing the timing

Jesus states explicitly in Mark that no one knows the date of the end times: not angels, not even the Son, but only the Father. Mark 13: 32 is startling because it reveals that Jesus intentionally withheld knowledge from himself during his time on earth.

This teaching stops people from trying to determine future dates or performing complex calculations based on Dead Sea Scroll references. Instead, it places the timing in the highest classified level of the universe.

By refusing to know the hour, Jesus exemplified complete trust in the Father’s timing. He left that knowledge unknown so we would stay watchful at all times, instead of trying to figure out a mystery that was never meant to be known by us.

Judgment beginning with God’s own people

The Book of Peter states plainly that judgment actually begins with God’s people. The prophecy completely reverses our common understanding of Armageddon.

Those who claimed allegiance with God will be the first audited and will have to answer to a much higher level of expectation because they knew better. Rather than “us vs. them”, the end times start with a critical assessment of how the faithful lived their lives with the light they had.

A new heaven and earth, but with nations still present

If you envision the apocalypse as some giant delete button pressed on human history, changing everyone into identical ghosts floating around up in the clouds, then you’ve never read the Bible’s ultimate vision for planet Earth. The New Testament reveals God’s message as surprisingly tangible and real rather than ethereal.

John writes about “a New Earth ” and you’ll notice that there are still distinct nations roaming the earth. This prophecy affirms that our ethnicity, our languages, and every good thing about our culture will not simply be wiped away. They will be rescued.

The apocalypse is not the annihilation of our world. It is the renewal of our world. Your personal history and identity still matter when you stand in Heaven. And Heaven is not a grey, foggy void, it is a wildly diverse world.

People hardened by plagues instead of repenting

It’s tempting to think that if things ever get bad enough mankind will finally repent and call out to God for mercy. But as we learn from the prophecies of the Bowls and Trumpets of Revelation, that’s not what happens during the apocalypse.

As terrifying plagues ravage the earth, the Bible repeats a chilling phrase: “They did not repent… but instead they cursed the name of God.” Terrible suffering doesn’t always soften hearts, it often stiffens people’s resistance.

Silence in heaven at a critical moment

Finally, when the Seventh Seal is opened, the Scripture surprises us with utter silence. For about half an hour heaven itself grows completely quiet. After chapters filled with blaring trumpets and chaotic events, the angelic music stops and the angels themselves go silent.

Why would heaven fall silent in the middle of the end times? We aren’t told why, but it leaves us with the idea that even during the apocalypse there will come a time when God absolutely halts everything and it is silent.

There are two interpretations of this silence: some people see it as heaven mourning future judgment while others think God uses it to hear earthly prayers without any distraction.
