11 products that claim to solve a problem you don’t actually have

It feels like there’s a new piece of tech coming out each day that promises to make our lives easier, but do we actually need them all?

Banana Slicers

A banana slicer helps you chop your banana into perfect slices in one go. However, chances are that it’s not saving you a lot of time because most of us can wield a knife & slice up a banana in a few seconds.

Plus, it’s just another thing to wash. While it may be a cute idea, let’s not pretend a banana slicer is going to make cooking drastically easier or faster.

Avocado Savers

Next, we have avocado savers that are supposed to keep your cut avocados fresh & green. Yes, they do work but here’s the thing, a little lemon juice & some cling wrap do the trick just fine.

You really don’t need any special equipment to stop your avocados from browning as long as you do it early enough.

Egg Cubers

Egg cubers are for those times when you’ve thought, “If only my boiled egg were square,” which is…when exactly?

These devices are meant to make your eggs fit better in containers & look neater in a sandwich but really, how often have you thought an egg’s shape is inconvenient? It’s a waste of money.

Soda Can Handles

Soda can handles turn your soda can into a mug with a handle and they’re supposed to stop your hand from getting cold while you’re holding a chilled can.

It’s a nice idea but most people don’t seem to mind the cold and a soda can handle is another thing to carry around. That kinda defeats the convenience of a can.

Self-Stirring Mugs

Self-stirring mugs are here to save the day for those who find stirring their coffee too much effort. With the press of a button, your drink stirs itself, making for a nice party trick.

However, stirring with a spoon is hardly strenuous work for the majority of us & a self-stirring mug seems rather unnecessary.

Digital Counting Coin Banks

Digital counting coin banks count your change for you & display the total, solving the problem of counting your coins. We all know that it can be mildly annoying but it’s hardly a major issue for most.

Yes, it can keep track of your spare change. However, it’s not going to revolutionize your finances anytime soon.

Wi-Fi-Enabled Water Bottles

Wi-Fi-enabled water bottles track how much water you drink & remind you to take a sip through a smartphone app.

Of course, staying hydrated is super important yet you’ve got to ask if you really need your water bottle sending you notifications? Most people can manage a drink when they’re thirsty without it.

Electric Wine Openers

Electric wine openers are here to take the struggle out of uncorking your favorite bottle.

With a bit of practice, though, a traditional wine opener does the job just fine. Electric wine openers are more of a luxury than a solution to a widespread problem.

Touchless Soap Dispensers

Here’s one for the germophobes—touchless soap dispensers. They keep your hands & bathroom germ-free by dispensing soap with just a wave of your hand.

But the truth is that pushing a pump isn’t exactly a health hazard, especially since you’re about to wash your hands anyway. You’re better off investing in good soap.

Glow-in-the-Dark Toilet Paper

Glow-in-the-dark toilet paper is supposed to help you find your way to the bathroom at night without turning on the light, which solves a problem that’s easily fixed with a nightlight.

Or you could just use the light on your phone. And honestly, most of us can find the bathroom in the dark relatively easily now.

Bluetooth-Enabled Smart Forks

Finally, we’ve got Bluetooth-enabled smart forks that vibrate to tell you you’re eating too fast. The idea is to promote slower eating for better digestion which has all kinds of benefits.

However, the jury’s out on whether we need a gadget to remind us to slow down because you could better solve this issue with a bit of self-awareness.
