11 once-famous actors you’ve probably forgotten about

For quite a while, these actors seemed to turn up constantly, but then they suddenly vanished from our screens and from our memories.

He walked away from teen-idol fame

Jonathan Taylor Thomas

You couldn’t avoid Jonathan Taylor Thomas during the ‘90s. He played Randy on Home Improvement and voiced young Simba in The Lion King. He was also in movies like Tom and Huck, so he was pretty well known. Then he disappeared.

It was on purpose, though, as he left Home Improvement in 1998 to study at Harvard, St. Andrews, and Columbia. JTT later showed up again on Last Man Standing, but he mostly lives a quieter life now.

One high-school movie followed her around

Rachael Leigh Cook

You hear the name ‘Rachael Leigh Cook’, and you probably think about She’s All That before anything else. She played Laney Boggs in the 1999 hit movie, then followed it up with Josie and the Pussycats in 2001. But that one didn’t do anywhere near as well.

Still, Cook continued to act in television and romantic movies, although her big theatrical run was pretty much over. Cook hasn’t exactly disappeared from our screens. But she sure has faded from a lot of our memories.

Billy Loomis became a TV dad

Skeet Ulrich

There was something about Skeet Ulrich that seemed like he was made for moody ’90s movies. Scream had him in his most famous role, where he played Billy Loomis, and then The Craft came after. As Good as It Gets and Ride with the Devil followed those up, although his movie stardom didn’t keep building in the same way.

Ulrich reappeared decades later, although on the small screen instead. He played FP Jones in Riverdale, the father of the character nicknamed Jughead. It’s kind of strange, really. The creepy boyfriend from Scream became a television dad.

Casper was only the beginning

Devon Sawa

You probably recognize Devon Sawa for his role in Final Destination, but he was actually in a very different type of movie years earlier. Yes, he appears at the end of Casper as the boy who dances with Christina Ricci. He went on to star in Idle Hands, too, as well as being the main man in Eminem’s ‘Stan’ video.

It seemed like Sawa was practically everywhere, but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing. Sawa later said that all these roles led to him burning out, so he stepped away from the industry for several years. He returned to Vancouver and got sober. He also considered quitting completely, though he eventually came back, playing roles in Chucky and Hacks.

Cher became hard to separate from her

Alicia Silverstone had appeared in The Crush and several Aerosmith videos. But it was Clueless that really put her on the map, and it felt like Cher Horowitz was practically everywhere. You just couldn’t beat that yellow plaid outfit.

Silverstone later said, however, that all the attention on her became overwhelming and led to her pulling back from acting for a while. She eventually returned, with roles like The Baby-Sitters Club and Bugonia. None of these were anywhere near as big as Clueless, though.

People stopped recognizing Baby

Jennifer Grey

The biggest role for Jennifer Grey came in 1987, when she was in Dirty Dancing. That movie came hot on the heels of her role as Jeanie in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. But the reason she disappeared from the limelight had nothing to do with her wanting less fame. No, Grey had two rhinoplasty procedures that apparently changed her appearance too much.

People stopped recognizing her. That’s right, she was famous, but people looked straight past her. Grey continued working and even won Dancing With the Stars in 2010. Yet she never had another movie role as big as Baby Houseman.

John Connor grew up fast

Before Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Edward Furlong had never acted in a movie. He ended up opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger at just 13, playing John Connor in one of the biggest films of 1991. He then appeared in American History X and Pecker.

Sadly, addiction and legal trouble caused serious problems for his career, including missing the chance to return for Terminator 3. Furlong has recently begun acting again. He has also openly spoken about his journey to eventually get sober.

Acting was never the final plan

Leelee Sobieski

It really did seem like Leelee Sobieski was going to be everywhere. She was in Deep Impact and Never Been Kissed to start with, as well as Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. Sobieski even managed to get nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work in Joan of Arc.

Yet she decided to leave the silver screen behind her while she was still quite young. She retired from screen work in her late 20s and focused on raising her children. Sobieski has continued to make art under the name Leelee Kimmel.

He stepped away from the blockbuster track

Josh Hartnett

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Josh Hartnett would spend the entire 2000s on movie posters. It really did seem that way. He was in Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down in 2001, then in 40 Days and 40 Nights the year after. These big movies made it seem like he had a big career ahead.

Except, Hartnett himself wasn’t all that interested in living like a full-time Hollywood star. He actually turned down major roles and moved away from Los Angeles. Hartnett stuck to much smaller projects and only recently returned to the big screen with Oppenheimer and Trap.

Her big run ended surprisingly quickly

Thora Birch

Thora Birch’s career is a bit of a strange one. It seemed like she hit the peak of her adult acting career almost immediately, starting with American Beauty in 1999. Ghost World followed in 2001, and you’d probably expect her to do many more major movies after that. That didn’t happen.

Birch actually took time away and went back to school. She continued to work, yes, but it was mostly outside the usual Hollywood cycle for a while. It took until 2022 for her to return in a big way, but this was as a director for The Gabby Petito Story.

Her debut arrived almost by accident

Shannyn Sossamon

Shannyn Sossamon had quite the unusual route into movies. She was working as a DJ at a birthday party when casting director Francine Maisler noticed her, leading to Sossamon landing A Knight’s Tale in 2001. She acted opposite Heath Ledger in the film.

She was then in 40 Days and 40 Nights and The Rules of Attraction before she decided to pull back from the acting scene. Sossamon focused on making music and directing short films instead. She wasn’t all that interested in being everywhere.

Some characters manage to become so iconic that, decades later, people only see that character when they see the actor, no matter how much they might’ve changed.
