Home upgrades feel exciting when they’re new, whether that’s because of the fresh paint & shiny fixtures, along with cool gadgets. But just give it a few years. Eventually, some of those “smart” ideas become problems. We spoke to some homeowners, and here are eleven upgrades that they later regretted doing. Which one did you live to regret?

Built-in TV niches

Built-in TV niches look sleek. But the problem is that TVs keep changing shape & size. Soon enough, the niche looks too small or too wide, perhaps simply too awkward, so you’ll end up with a newer screen half sticking out & wires everywhere. You’ll also have drywall patches that never blend quite right.
Matte black bathroom fixtures

Most matte black bathroom fixtures start out looking gorgeous, as they seem so modern & sharp, without any glare. Fast-forward a few years. Every drip starts to show, whether they’re water spots or soap streaks. Even tiny scratches from cleaning become obvious. Worse still, the finish dulls unevenly, so a faucet from 2019 doesn’t match a handle you replaced in 2025.
Jetted tubs

A big whirlpool tub feels like luxury. That is, until you actually own one. The pumps need maintenance and the jets collect grime inside the pipes, yuck. Congratulations, this means you’ve just given yourself yet another thing to clean. The water also needs cleaning and regular treatment, not to mention the energy costs of heating all that water. Most people decide to stop using their jetted tubs altogether, except maybe as a bragging right item.
Stone veneer accent walls

At first, stone walls look rustic & cozy. But then you notice that they collect dust in every crevice. The walls start to scratch your furniture & the baseboards don’t sit flush against it. And once you’re tired of the look and need a change, removing the walls is nothing short of a nightmare. Paint doesn’t cover it well either, since you usually have to skim coat the whole wall. So why bother?
Sunken fire pits

The brochures show off sunken fire pits as something rather inviting. The reality is different. When it rains, the pit fills like a birdbath, turning ash to muck & clogging the drains, while freeze-thaw cycles crack the seating ledge. The smoke usually stains anything nearby. Soon enough, people just stop using their fire pits because they’re too much hassle.
Sunrooms

Who wouldn’t want to sip coffee in a bright glass room? But once you spend a summer afternoon in there, it’s sweltering, and then winter comes around & it’s freezing. The furniture fades from all the direct sunlight. Before long, you’d like to be anywhere but this sunroom because it’s so uncomfortable in there.
Smart home wiring

It’s easy to think that hardwired smart tech sounds like the future. Then the future shows up with new gadgets. Old systems can’t keep up & wires are buried in walls, while your smart hubs stop being supported. You’ll be stuck with clunky panels and dated keypads that have no place in the world anymore.
Exotic hardwood floors

Bamboo & acacia look beautiful on installation day, but then the dents and scratches start showing up. The water marks stand out, too. Refinishing them isn’t easy since some boards are too thin or just too hard to sand, so within a few years, the floor doesn’t look fresh anymore. It’s way too difficult to find matching planks when they need a repair.
Water features

It doesn’t matter how relaxing a fountain or pond seems in the beginning because it’ll change after a while. This is usually because the algae spread & the liners split. Winters don’t help either. The costs to fix it add up, while maintenance in general isn’t exactly easy, which forces many people to shut the whole thing off. It’s more hassle than it’s worth.
Drop ceilings

Drop ceilings are practical for hiding pipes or wiring. Sadly, the honeymoon phase doesn’t last because the tiles start sagging & discoloring. They might also start cracking. Then there’s the issue of dust gathering along the grid, and when a single tile needs replacing, good luck finding the right match. It’s too much.
Intricate tile patterns

Bold tile looks great in the showroom. Living with it? Not so much. It doesn’t take long for the designs to feel dated, and any grout stains never really disappear. Ripping it all out is the only option that you have whenever you decide to get a fresh look. And believe us, you’re going to want that pretty soon.
