Fear of Change

It’s scary to change when you are used to your life. If you feel scared, or uncomfortable, the thought of going out in the world might make you dread it. Even if your life isn’t quite as good, the idea of starting something new is intimidating. The terror of that can lock you in. It keeps you from doing things that might make your life better.
Lack of Clear Goals

If your end point isn’t clear, then you may just be floundering. When you don’t know where you’re going, it’s difficult to be inspired or move forward. You can go through the motions with no sense of purpose. Having concrete, do-able goals gives you something to work toward and makes you feel like you’re more in charge of your life.

Negative Thinking

You can’t find the good in anything if you’re always looking for the negative. Negative thinking blinds you and leaves you feeling immobilized. You can even come to think it’s never going to get better. That makes it hard to act. This vicious circle can be broken by shifting your thinking and seeing the possibilities.
Overthinking

If you sit there for too long, analysing every decision, you will end up stuck. Overthinking often leads to indecision. In those cases, you worry so much about choosing the wrong option that you end up making no decision at all. This can trap you in a corner. Sometime it’s best to act and see what happens than continue to analyse in vain.
Sticking to Routine

Routines can be comforting. But they can be deadly traps too if they remain static. Doing the same thing day after day just gets old and humdrum. Perhaps you start to feel like you’re on autopilot, a machine in motion. Adding a bit of variety to your routine such as trying something new or meeting new people will get you out of the routine.
Lack of Support

Support systems can make all the difference when it comes to moving on. But without support and someone to talk to, you’re left alone and in the dark. You might start to doubt yourself and your potential to change. Be in a room full of happy, supportive people and you’ll be able to push yourself out of your funk.
Ignoring Self-Care

If you don’t look after yourself, you won’t have the energy and drive to change. When you don’t take care of your body and mind, you are exhausted and depressed. ‘Care for yourself means you’re ready for anything that life might throw at you. So if you are able to rest, eat, and do things that you love then you will feel more motivated and in the right frame of mind.
Unresolved Emotions

When you hold on to wounds or unspoken issues it will weigh you down. Such feelings can serve as a powerful shackle that locks you in the past. Maybe you aren’t sure how to let go or hope for the best. You can process these feelings (whether on your own or with a therapist) to let it go and move on.
Comparing Yourself to Others

It’s so easy to start measuring yourself against others these days when everybody’s success is on display. But the pattern leaves you feeling like you’re not doing enough, that you’re behind. That will wear you down and lock you into a negative state of mind. Instead of comparing, be focused on your own achievements and accomplishments.
Lack of Inspiration

You just need something fresh to get your imagination going. If you are not inspired, you become bored and in a rut. If you aren’t excited about something, you’re unlikely to be inspired to try something or move toward your goal. Creating new inspiration (from interests, books, travel, etc.) can re-energize you and get you going again.
