Let’s face it, all those lifestyle trends that you see on social media are rather tempting. Unfortunately, not all trends are created equal.
For example, the diets that have you dreaming of carbs or tech that promises the moon but gets lost in the stars are quite pointless. Here are ten times I really should’ve just said, “no thanks.” Take them as a lesson on what to avoid.
Juice Cleanses
Oh, the days when everyone was gulping down green juice like it was the elixir of life. I did the same and thought I’d come out feeling like a superhero; instead, I was just hungry & cranky.
After a few days, I realized I could’ve just eaten more vegetables to achieve the same health boost. And I wouldn’t feel like I was starving myself.
The Keto Diet
As part of the keto diet, bread is the enemy and fat is your friend. I was all in.
What they don’t tell you is how much you’ll miss a simple sandwich, as well as the mood swings & cravings. Feeling a sudden hatred for the sight of cheese was my keto experience.
In the end, a balanced diet didn’t seem so boring after all.
Buying a Smartwatch
Smartwatches were supposed to make life easier because they track your steps, your sleep and your every breath.
Unfortunately, mine became a wrist dictator, constantly sending me reminders & making me obsess over whether I was walking enough or sleeping well.
It felt like I was living for the watch and not the other way around. Instead, I found I’d rather go for a walk without worrying about hitting some arbitrary goal.
Minimalist Living
Minimalism looked so nice in photos and that’s why I tried to turn my home into a zen paradise; only to realize I missed my stuff.
A home should feel lived in instead of a museum where you’re afraid to touch anything.
Later, I learned about balance. It doesn’t include clutter but a few cozy touches to differentiate between a house and a home.
Participating in Social Media Challenges
Who hasn’t wanted to do social media challenges? I sure did.
But not all challenges are created equal as some of them can be downright dangerous, like the Salt Chip Challenge. And some of them are just plain silly.
I’ve learned to pick & choose my challenges because fame isn’t worth a trip to the ER.
Subscription Boxes
Subscription boxes felt like Christmas every month; until they didn’t.
At first, it was exciting to get new surprises in the mail but the novelty soon wore off and I was left with a bunch of stuff I didn’t really need. The surprise isn’t as fun when you’re paying for it monthly. Instead, it just clutters up your space.
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
HIIT workouts promised fast results and I started them immediately, ready to sweat my way to fitness glory. Fast forward through sprain & exhaustion, I realized I’m not a professional athlete; moderation is important.
Exercise should make you feel good and not like you’ve been hit by a truck. I’ve since found peace with workouts that don’t leave me fearing for my life.
Zero-Waste Lifestyle
Going zero-waste is a noble goal but it certainly is difficult. I tried to overhaul my life overnight & quickly got overwhelmed with all the DIY toothpaste disasters and other issues. It was a lot.
I learned that making small, sustainable changes is better than trying to do it all and giving up because it’s too hard.
DIY Home Renovations
Thanks to all those home improvement shows, I thought, “How hard can it be?” Those are famous last words.
Between the torn up wall fiasco in the living room and the crooked shelf in the office, I learned that some things are better left to the pros. Yes, it’s great to be hands-on, but not everything is as easy as it looks on TV.
Investing in Cryptocurrency
When everyone was talking about making a fortune overnight with cryptocurrency, I didn’t want to miss out. I invested in it without really understanding what I was doing; but it’s not that simple.
The stress of watching the market’s ups & downs wasn’t worth it. Instead, I figured out it’s far better to invest in what you know and understand.
