14 Ways People Show Power Through Small Actions

Powerful people don’t always walk around with briefcases or wear sunglasses indoors—the ones who actually give off a strong presence aren’t actually trying so hard. It’s the tiny stuff, the things you wouldn’t notice unless you were looking real close, that really make them powerful. Here are fourteen little things people do that secretly make them look powerful. These are the sneaky things that quietly tell people, “Yeah, I’ve got this.”

They Wear the Same Jewelry

Rather than dripping in diamonds, they wear a plain silver ring or a watch—nothing new & nothing flashy. It’s the same thing, and it becomes part of their look, like a uniform, which gives off the idea that they know exactly who they are. Such consistency feels really grounded, almost like they already decided what fits and stuck with it. That’s pretty powerful stuff.

They Never Rush Through the Door

They’re the kind of people who refuse to speed up just because someone else is there and they’ll move at their usual pace, even if the door’s closing or someone’s waiting. Instead of being rude, they’re just not racing, and something about it feels very “I’m not here to impress you.” They know where they’re going, and they’ll get there when they get there, so there’s no need to rush every step.

They Don’t Over-Explain

You ask them why they did something, and they’ll tell you that it “felt right,” without any explanation why. It’s almost unfair how confident it sounds, but it’s not because they’re being secretive—they just don’t feel the need to unpack every little thing. They made a call, and that’s the end of it, with such simplicity throwing people off because it shuts down overthinking without being rude.

They Carry a Pen

These people always carry a pen with them that’s clearly not from a hotel and has a certain weight to it—maybe they even click it once before writing, although not to show off. It’s a statement piece that shows they don’t borrow because they’re ready, and they probably picked it because it writes smoothly or because it doesn’t smudge. It’s a small thing, but it shows up again & again in a way that makes them seem reliable and never an afterthought.

They Tilt Their Head Less When Listening

We all do that extra-noddy, head-tilty thing to seem nice, but powerful people don’t do that—they just listen, with their face straight & eyes steady. It makes their reactions harder to read, and they don’t feel the need to perform their listening, nor give any exaggerated nods or “mhmm” every two seconds. That stillness makes the other person pay attention more closely, almost without realizing it, because these people seem completely unbothered.

They Keep Their Hands Still When They Talk

Similarly, some people can’t talk without turning into an interpretive dance, although these people are total opposites and their hands barely move, if at all. One stays on their drink, the other rests on their leg, and that’s about it, which doesn’t feel forced because it’s clear that they’re just calm. Anytime that they do move their hands, everyone looks up because it’s rare, and that quiet focus somehow makes people listen harder.

They Turn Their Phone Face Down in Meetings

It’s such a small thing, but turning your phone face down says a lot because it shows they’re locked in and refuse to get distracted. That’s quite a brave thing to do in a room full of buzzes & pings, as it suggests that they’re not trying to prove anything—they know where their focus is. Doing so shows that they have control over their attention, and their phone stays there until they’re done.

They Don’t React to Compliments Right Away

Say something nice and they’ll smile eventually, although not instantly, as there’s a beat where they just take it in that doesn’t feel fake or awkward. It’s more like they’re used to hearing good stuff and don’t need to make a fuss, which somehow makes the compliment land even harder. Rather than brushing it off, they just let it hang in the air for a second, as though they’re completely fine with receiving it, which makes them seem self-assured.

They Let People Interrupt Them and Finish Later

When someone interrupts them, they’ll stop & let the other person talk without a problem, but they don’t forget what they were saying. A few minutes later, they’ll casually loop back and finish their thought in a calm way that shows that they weren’t done with their points. They don’t need to fight for space because they just take it when they’re ready, and when they pick up where they left off, it’s clear they weren’t rattled.

They Use People’s Names

They use people’s names just once, like saying, “Hey Sarah, can you pass the thing?” That’s it. It’s subtle, but it creates a moment of attention that makes you realize they remembered you, and when they do so only once, it has more of an impact than repeating it. They don’t shout it across the room or drop it in every sentence, which changes how someone listens to them.

They Barely Touch Their Face in Public

While everyone else tugs at their hoodie strings or messes with their hair, powerful people are still and refuse to fidget. It makes them seem more self-contained and makes it seem like nothing around them is throwing them off, even if it really is. Most of the time, you won’t even realize what it is that’s making them feel so grounded until you notice their face hasn’t moved an inch.

They Don’t Say “I Think” Before Opinions

They don’t start with “I think” or “I feel”—instead, they just voice their opinions without the warning or hedging. It’s straight to the point, and that means you’re never left guessing where they stand, which makes people listen. When someone speaks like that, you don’t feel like they’re trying to ease into it as they’ve already decided.

They Don’t Comment on Other People’s Choices

You’ll notice they’re the only ones not chiming in when someone shows up wearing something daring or makes a weird choice—instead, they keep their reactions to themselves & move on. It may seem like politeness, but really, they just don’t feel the need to narrate other people’s stuff. Everyone else may be judging the other person, yet these confident people are already back to what they were doing.

They Skip Small Talk When They Feel Like It

Some days, they walk in and head straight to the point, without any small talk, and nobody takes it personally because it’s not cold. It’s just real. Other days, they might joke around or chat forever, but when they don’t, they don’t fake it & they’re not rude about it. It’s just that they’re not always in performance mode, and it’s honestly quite refreshing. Which one are you trying next?
