Dying Values: 10 Traits That Made America Great That Are Now Disappearing

Let’s get one thing straight–-America’s a unique country and that’s also what makes it so great. Unfortunately, times are changing and so are our values. This means that plenty of traits and behaviors that were once truly American have started disappearing and suggest that our great nation is on the decline. Why is it happening? Let’s find out.

Community Involvement

Once upon a time, everyone knew their neighbors & block parties were the norm but people are now too caught up in their own lives. Engaging with your local community comes second, while our jobs and personal lives come first. The shift to online socializing doesn’t help much either. Sadly, it has made our community bonds a bit looser than they used to be.

Respect for Authority

Gone are the days when a teacher’s word was gospel and everyone on the block trusted a local cop on the beat. No, these days, respect for authority has taken a hit. Of course, it’s no surprise since there are so many reports of those in authority misusing their powers, but it’s still pretty sad. Many people, especially younger people, are questioning whether those in charge are really looking out for their best interests.

Emphasis on Hard Work

The old belief that hard work will get you anywhere seems a bit outdated now. After all, you can become famous overnight from a viral video, so the idea of slowly climbing the career ladder isn’t all that attractive for most young people. They’d rather chase after quick success with less sweat. Can you blame them?

Patriotism

Our love for our country isn’t as straightforward as it used to be. In fact, many people have very different ideas about what showing love for your country really means. Some of us see it as wearing a flag pin and standing for the national anthem, while other people think you should speak out and demand change. Either way, our sense of patriotism is a lot more complicated than our past pride.

Personal Responsibility

Even taking personal responsibility for one’s actions is becoming a thing of the past. More often, people expect big entities, be it the government or big businesses, to step in and fix their problems. Self-reliance? That’s a myth. Our American ethos of self-reliance, which taught us to fish rather than expect a fish on our plates, is a thing of the past.

Family as a Priority

Putting family first isn’t the priority it once was, as many Americans are pushing off marriage and kids to focus on careers or personal growth. Our view on what life should look like and when major life events should happen has completely changed. The once-common, family-centered outlook is something you’ll only find in stories these days.

Faith in the American Dream

You can’t get more American than the American Dream but sadly, even that doesn’t hit like it used to. After all, economic issues and the sheer lack of social mobility have lots of people doubting whether the dream is still alive. You can’t keep believing when the ladder to success seems a lot steeper.

Etiquette and Civility

Good old-fashioned manners seem to be declining, especially online, where it’s easy to hide behind a screen. Being anonymous has made people more confident. They’re happy to make comments they’d never say face-to-face, which has made our conversations a bit rougher around the edges. Manners? What’s that?

Optimism

That unstoppable American optimism is getting a bit harder to find these days because people are more pessimistic about what’s coming next. They’re constantly worried about things like money, politics & the planet. Instead of the go-get-’em attitude that pushed our great nation to innovate and chase progress in the past, we just have people complaining about the next problem. It’s not all bad!

Appreciation for Veterans

We might still honor our veterans in public, but we fall short of giving them the real support that they need. For example, things like healthcare and mental health support are major problems for those who have served. It’s clear—how we say we value our veterans and how we actually treat them isn’t the same anymore. It wasn’t like this before.
