Coming from someone who has seen my fair share of office environments for the past 20 years & has seen Gen Z come in to workplaces — I can confidently say Gen Z challenges old habits and brings forth new versions of structured work that actually makes sense. What I most appreciate is their dedication to mental health. They prioritize self-care and expect the same from their employers as well.
In this list, I will discuss 8 toxic workplace norms Gen Z just isn’t going to tolerate.

Unfair Working Hours

Gen Z think that just because you work 80 hours a week that does not mean you’re doing a good job, and they are right. They know it is better to work smart rather than just working hard. This generation wants to enjoy their lives outside of work, and thinks that productivity is likely something they can do in a shortened timeline.
Lack of Flexibility

Gen Z has zero patience for rigid schedules — they love the idea of working from home or changing their hours up when necessary. Learning how to work remotely has taught them that employers who realize life doesn’t always stick in a 9-to-5 box are ideal. They anticipate being able to work during the time when they are most productive and long for not being attentive all day in an office.

Toxic Leadership

Gen Z want their leaders to be warm, approachable and great listeners. Work is miserable when leadership is toxic — whether that is micromanaging or a lack of communication. Managers who take on more of a mentorship role and inspire their staff – as opposed to stressing them out or making them feel replaceable – tend to be preferred by Gen Z.
Ignoring Mental Health

Generation Z are prioritizing mental health- they know everybody has their demons & wants a job where they will be supported. They are calling for employers to offer mental health resources — counseling, wellness programs etc. Gen Z easily moves to better places of work if their needs are ignored.
Non-Existent Diversity and Inclusion

This is a generation that looks for companies who practice diversity and keeps an open culture where everyone feels welcomed. A workplace that does not value these can make Gen Z feel estranged and insignificant.
Unclear Career Pathways

If Gen Z employees do not see opportunities for advancement or mentorship, they are not shy about leaving. Employers who provide staff a road map of their careers and support them are likely to retain Gen Z employees longer.
Too Much Competition

Gen Z thrives on cooperation, not a dog-eat-dog fight for supremacy. They understand a positive working environment is more efficient than one that saps time and energy in behind-the-back gossip. They prefer working with colleagues who help each other grow, rather than compete. A collaborative workplace can be a strategic draw to attract and keep Gen Z employees.
No Focus on Workplace Culture

Gen Z craves a balanced work culture.- They will take extreme measures to avoid toxic or negative environments. The absence of team spirit or support can make them feel unenthusiastic and discontented. What they want is an atmosphere of fun, dignity and teamwork in the workplace.
