14 Things That Make Us Say ā€œI Miss the ’80sā€

We miss the 80s! Not in a ā€œlife was better back thenā€ kind of way—but in those little flashes that sneak up on you. Like spotting an old VHS tape in your parents’ basement or hearing a jingle you haven’t thought about in decades. The ’80s were loud, weird, colorful & kind of perfect in their own messy way. A lot of it wouldn’t fly now—but some things? We can’t help but miss them.

Birthday Parties at the Pizza Place

The pizza was kind of cold, the lighting was terrible, & nobody cared. It was noisy, messy, full of cheap plastic prizes, and you probably had a party hat sitting crooked on your head. One kid always won on the first try at the claw machine—and we all screamed like it was the Super Bowl.

Just a clear spot, your favorite song and some slippery socks. You’d twirl around the living room while your parents either laughed or jumped in. Shoulder shimmies and head bobs were all it took.

You waited next to your boombox like your life depended on it. Hit record too late? Missed the start. DJ talked over it? Too bad. But that staticky mixtape? It was yours—built with patience, luck & way too much rewinding.

When TV Actually Turned Off for the Night

At some point late at night, the channel would stop airing stuff. You’d hear the national anthem, see a flag waving—and then nothing. Just static. Like the world said, ā€œOkay, that’s enough.ā€

The Lunchbox Everyone Wanted

They had metal clasps, matching thermoses, & always smelled vaguely like peanut butter & milk. Didn’t matter. If your box had a cartoon on it, you were cool.

Phones with Long Cords That Dragged Through the House

You stretched that cord as far as it’d go—usually taking a lamp down with it. You talked from the floor or wrapped yourself in the cord like a burrito. No texts. No group chats. Just voices (and the occasional ā€œIt’s for you!ā€ yelled down the hall).

Waiting Forever to Watch Your Favorite Movie Again

No streaming. No on-demand. If you missed it on TV, you just… waited. Renting was hit or miss. If your sibling taped over it with cartoons? That was it. So when you finally watched it again? It actually felt special.

It was chaos—blaring music, neon lights, & kids everywhere. You didn’t have to skate well—just staying upright was enough. If Prince or Madonna played, the place came alive.

The boxes were beat up, the dice were mismatched, & half the cards were gone—but somehow the game still happened. You made up rules, swapped in Monopoly tokens & laughed more than you played.

No trailers. No spoilers. Just a VHS cover & your gut feeling. Sometimes you got lucky. Sometimes it was trash. But even the bad ones made movie night fun.

You can’t remember where you left your keys—but you remember every word of the ā€œMy Buddyā€ jingle. Or the Crocker Spaniel one. They were cheesy, catchy & impossible to forget.

Denim Jackets

You didn’t buy them ripped—they got that way from real life. Fence climbs, bike falls, patches from concerts. It aged with you, & that made it cooler than anything you could buy new.

You’d hear them from across the mall—beeps, dings & explosions. It smelled like popcorn & stress. You wasted all your quarters & still begged for more. Winning didn’t matter. Just being there did.

You’d scan the listings, circle what you wanted to watch & look forward to it all week. No autoplay. No skipping. You actually planned to sit down & watch something—and that made it feel earned.
