If you’re old enough to remember the good old days when people made things from scratch at home, you may not realize how lucky you have it. In those times, our grandparents & great-grandparents would create everything. That’s quite a contrast to our quick trips to the store for almost everything we need! Let’s look at 12 everyday items that used to be homemade treasures but are now just another thing we grab during our grocery run.

Homemade Bread

Once upon a time, making bread at home was pretty standard. Families would mix & bake their bread right in their kitchen, which meant you always had the scent of fresh bread wafting through the house. Although it did become popular again during the pandemic, most of us just grab a loaf from the store. But store-bought bread doesn’t have that same cozy feel of a homemade batch.
Canned Fruits and Vegetables

People didn’t let anything go to waste, especially not the bounty of their gardens. They would spend hours canning fruits and veggies to keep them good throughout the winter. Today, we save time by buying canned goods off the shelf, even though there’s something special about opening a jar of preserves that you made with summer’s freshest produce.

Clothing and Textiles

Sewing all your clothes with a simple sewing machine is pretty difficult—and it was even harder by hand! Whether it was mending socks or crafting a complete outfit, our ancestors did it all. It’s a pretty far cry from life today, where fast fashion means our clothes are store-bought and often not made to last. There’s something to be said for the love & care that used to go into making each piece.
Furniture

Furniture making was once a common skill and many people crafted chairs or tables tailored to fit their spaces perfectly. Now, we usually buy these items ready-made from a store. While it’s much more convenient, we miss the charm & stories behind handcrafted pieces—maybe that’s why IKEA is still so popular.
Soaps and Cleaning Products

Believe it or not, our ancestors made their soap using just a few ingredients like lye and animal fat. These homemade soaps were effective & more eco-friendly than those we have now. Today, the cleaning aisle might be full of commercial products but none of them have the simple, natural essence of homemade soap.
Jams and Preserves

Who didn’t love grandma’s homemade jam? Making jams and preserves helped you use up any excess fruit, although you can just buy a jar of jam in minutes today. Still, nothing compares to the taste of jam made from fruit picked in your own backyard. You could cook them to the exact amount of sweetness that you liked.
Herbal Remedies and Medicines

Long before drugstores, people made remedies for common ailments using herbs or plants they grew themselves. Sometimes, they would just find them in the wild. Modern medicine is, of course, a huge advance, but those old recipes felt a bit more comforting because they were more personal.
Beer and Wine

Homebrewing has started to become a popular hobby again but it was once a way of life. Many families brewed their own beer and made wine from home-grown grapes, creating drinks that became part of daily life & special occasions. You just can’t get that same personal touch from commercial drinks. They sure are convenient, though!
Cheese

Cheesemaking is a true art and it’s not hard to see why it fell out of fashion. After all, it’s a pretty difficult process that involves curdling milk, pressing the curds, and patiently waiting for the cheese to age. We’d rather stick to trying the dozens of cheese varieties in stores, even if these mass-produced products don’t have the same uniqueness to them.
Candles

Since electricity wasn’t always guaranteed, candle-making was an essential skill. People made their own to light their homes after dark. These days, many people still have candles, although they usually just buy them for their scent or ambiance. Homemade or not, candles have a way of making any evening all the more cozy.
Toys

Even toys were handmade and that made each one unique. Parents and grandparents would carve & assemble toys for the little ones, making playtime extra special with these one-of-a-kind creations. That’s not to say that today’s toys aren’t fun—but they lack the love that comes from a toy made with your own two hands.
Ink and Dyes

Today, we’re pretty spoiled with our choice of inks & dyes as you can practically buy any color under the sun. But in the past, people made their own from natural materials including walnut shells, berries, and leaves. This meant they could create vibrant colors to pen letters and color fabrics in quite an environmentally friendly way. Maybe we should bring this one back!
