7 reasons people may tune you out

You are at work and your friends are planning to go out for dinner. You know some of the best Italian restaurants in the area and you suggest one, but your friends ignore your idea and keep talking about their own plans. Does this kind of thing happen often?

It can be really frustrating to feel like your voice isn’t being heard by others. It will bring down both your confidence and your opportunities. In this list, we’ll explore 7 common reasons why your voice might not be heard anymore and give you some practical tips to help you make sure your voice is heard, respected and valued.

Lack of Engagement

If you don’t join discussions often or share your ideas regularly, your voice can get lost. As you are usually silent, your friends and colleagues may have the assumption that you’re not interested in voicing opinions or don’t have anything valuable to say, even if you do.

Lack of Confidence

Do you have a shaking voice when you express your ideas? If you’re not confident when you speak, people might ignore what you say. Your trembling voice will make them think that even you are not sure of your own opinions.

Go in front of a mirror and practice how you present your thoughts clearly. The continuous practice will help you express your ideas more confidently and only then will you be able to convince the listeners with what you say.

Talking Too Much

It is ok to share your thoughts, but if you rarely listen or create an equal space for others to speak, your voice may become a background noise. It would be painful to keep listening to your dominating voice.

Consequently, people would start to ignore whatever you say. Also, try to speak to the point and be concise, so that other people won’t feel like they are listening to a never ending speech.

Being Overly Critical

If you always criticize others whenever you get a chance to express your opinions, nobody would want to listen to you anymore. People love constructive criticism which helps them grow and overcome their flows. However, if you are frequently pointing out their flaws without offering solutions, it makes you seem less constructive.

Eventually, they would stop listening to you. So, try to frame your critiques in a more positive way focusing on building solutions.

Lack of Expertise or Knowledge

You’re in a meeting at work discussing a new project on data analysis, but you’ve never worked with data analysis before. You share your ideas, but your team knows that you don’t have experience with data analysis. If they feel that your suggestions are not well-informed, they might not take them seriously.

To prevent this from happening, do your research and stay well informed about the subject matter you are going to speak about.

Poor Timing

Sharing your ideas at the right time is important to make sure you’re heard. if you bring up an idea when others are busy or focused on something else, you might not get the attention it needs. Or, if the discussion has already moved on to another topic, your idea might feel out of place, and people may ignore it.

Group Dynamics

Can you believe that sometimes, it’s not about you but the group you’re in? If a few loud voices dominate the conversation, you might find it hard to get your ideas across. There would be no room for other opinions. In such a scenario, you better try to speak up more. Or talk one-on-one with someone later, where your ideas are more likely to be heard.
