Neighbors—we all have them. If you’re lucky, you’ll have cool ones who’ll come with a cup of sugar when you need it most. But the others? They’ll make you double-check your locks at night! Here are a few reasons why you might want to keep a watchful eye on your neighbors—not in a creepy way, just to be on the safe side.

Unusual Noise Patterns

Some houses are just too loud at the weirdest times. You know the ones—there are odd bangs & booms in the middle of the night or blaring music when everyone else is trying to sleep. Of course, everyone has a party now and then. But if it’s happening all the time, it suggests that something’s up.
High Foot Traffic

It’s one thing to have friends over—it’s another if there’s a constant parade of people coming and going from your neighbor’s house at all hours. It’s worse when it’s a never-ending stream of visitors who look like they’re trying not to be noticed. Sure, it could be nothing—or something worth keeping an eye on.

Overgrown Yards

Not everyone has a green thumb and that’s completely fine. However, a yard that starts looking like a jungle often indicates more than just laziness—maybe the person inside isn’t doing so great. It could also mean they’re just not around much. Either way, it’s something that deserves some concern.
Aggressive Pets

No matter your opinion on cats or dogs, a neighbor’s pet that seems more Cujo than Lassie is a problem. Aggressive behavior sometimes means the animal isn’t being cared for properly—or that it’s simply dangerous. It’s definitely something to keep in mind when you’re walking by and perhaps report to Animal Control.
Excessive Security Measures

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home. However, when someone’s place starts looking like Fort Knox with cameras and lights everywhere, you have to wonder what they’re protecting. Do they care a lot about their privacy? Or do they have something that they don’t want anyone to see?
Frequent Police Visits

Seeing a police car in front of a house once in a while isn’t a big deal yet if it becomes a regular occurrence, something’s not right. It could actually affect the whole neighborhood. Something quite big must be going down over there if they need that much attention from law enforcement. And it’s not good!
Odd Smells

Weird smells often mean something’s off. Whether it’s something chemical or simply a bad stench, it may mean something unhealthy or even illegal happening behind closed doors. Plus, nobody wants to live next door to a house that smells like a science experiment gone wrong—or last year’s garbage.
Hoarding Behavior

A house that’s overflowing with stuff is more dangerous than many people realize. Hoarding creates fire hazards & attracts pests—not to mention it’s a sign that the person living there might be struggling with some serious issues. While it’s hard to help out or even approach the topic without seeming nosy, it’s something you have to do. It could affect the whole block.
Lack of Social Interaction

Being an introvert is okay—actively avoiding any and all contact with neighbors isn’t. It might mean they’re up to something they don’t want others to know about or that they need help but don’t know how to ask for it. Of course, you have to respect people’s privacy. At the same time, a friendly conversation over the fence is what makes a neighborhood feel like a community.
Suspicious Nighttime Activity

You’re naturally going to be curious if you notice your neighbor is up to some weird stuff after dark, like moving boxes or being too secretive about their nighttime projects. They could be using the cover of night to hide things they don’t want anyone to see in the daylight. Those late-night activities might be too mysterious for comfort.
Inconsistent Stories

When you’re speaking to your neighbor, think carefully about their stories about what they do or where they’ve been. Do they add up? People who are constantly changing stories might be trying to hide something and any inconsistencies indicate there’s more to the story.
Unusual Internet Activity

Having someone mess with your Wi-Fi is a real sign of trouble. Rather than simply being annoyed about having to reset your router, it’s also a privacy & security issue. And let’s not forget that unsettling feeling of not knowing what they’re up to! Anything dodgy they do on the internet could come back to bite the whole block.
A History of Conflict

A neighbor who’s always in the middle of some drama is a neighbor you should stay away from. Why? Because someone who’s creating trouble or has a history of disputes with others will likely drag you into it, too. A peaceful neighborhood is a happy neighborhood. Someone who’s always at the center of problems will disrupt that peace.
