12 products that seem to be deteriorating in quality

We’ve all had those moments where we’ve bought something and thought to ourselves, “That used to be a lot better.” And we’re not imagining it. Some industries just don’t make stuff like they used to, whether that’s wobbly furniture or coffee that tastes much worse. Unfortunately, the drop in quality isn’t always obvious until you’re knee-deep in regret. Here are twelve industries where the quality has gone downhill. Which one do you think is the worst offender?

Printer Ink & Toner

Whenever you try to print something, your printer suddenly decides it’s out of ink, even though it’s not. Worst of all, a lot of printers now won’t work unless you’re using their exact brand of ink, so you can forget all about using third-party cartridges, which are often cheaper and better. Refilling them is also a lot harder than it used to be, and it’s really quite frustrating how something so basic has turned into such a hassle.

Phone Accessories

Once upon a time, you could buy a charger and use it for years, but it’s not that way anymore. The majority of new cables barely survive a month, no matter how well you treat them, while phone cases split at the edges or fade fast. And every time the phone companies release something new, it has a different port, which means all your older stuff suddenly becomes useless. Most of us end up with a drawer full of junk that doesn’t fit anything.

Music Apps

As soon as you open Spotify and hit play, you’re immediately met with two ads & a skip limit, as well as a pop-up telling you to upgrade. The free versions used to be fine, but now they’re packed with interruptions, and playlists don’t even stay in order unless you pay to use them. The search feature sucks, too, because there’s a good chance you’ll get a cover version or have to sit through a video ad to hear the real thing.

Streaming Services

Speaking of streaming, the days when Netflix cost less than a sandwich and had every show you wanted with no ads are long gone. Now, there are a dozen apps, each one with half of what you’re looking for, and subscriptions cost way more than they should, even though the shows aren’t necessarily any better. Every time you log in, your favorite shows have vanished and been replaced by a cooking competition you didn’t ask for. They also split content across different platforms, so you have to subscribe to two or three services to keep watching the same series.

Delivery Services

You place an online order & get a tracking link, but then you get no update, as the package doesn’t move for days. When it does arrive, it might be dented or missing something. It may even just be randomly thrown near your front door. If it’s late or lost, good luck getting any real help because customer service just sends you automated replies telling you to wait, or they’ll act like the problem’s fixed when it clearly isn’t.

Furniture

Most of us have had that experience of sitting down on a brand-new chair and feeling like we shouldn’t move too much or it might collapse. It’s mostly because, these days, “some assembly required” usually means you’re getting a puzzle made of cardboard and screws that strip after one turn. Solid wood is rarer than ever, as most manufacturers use veneers or mystery boards that disintegrate when it rains near them. The more expensive items aren’t a safe bet, either.

Appliances

Fridges used to survive practically forever, but now, you’re lucky if yours makes it past year six without leaking or giving up. A lot of new models are loaded with WiFi capabilities & digital screens that look cool, until they glitch and you’re forced to call tech support to reconnect yours. Many of them have parts that break and aren’t covered under warranty unless they’re the exact ones listed, meaning every repair is bound to be a lot more expensive.

Packaged Snacks

Most bags of chips are just air now with a handful of sad, broken chips at the bottom, and if you think they taste a little different, you’re not wrong. Quite a few brands have swapped ingredients to cut costs, and you can tell because the crunch is weaker & the flavor’s off. The bags also keep getting smaller, while the price doesn’t. Just what are we even paying for anymore?

Air Travel

In the past, flying meant you’d receive a couple of snacks & smiles, maybe even a pillow if you asked nicely. Now, it feels like a test of patience. Legroom is practically non-existent, and just the act of boarding the plane feels like utter chaos. You’re lucky if they offer you water without charging a fee. You can’t even try changing your flight without being on hold for 45 minutes to speak to a robot, and some airlines charge for basic things, too.

Journalism

While the headlines got louder, it often feels like they’re compensating for a lack of journalistic integrity, as most news articles are rushed or clickbait-y. Typos slip through, and quotes get pulled out of thin air, which makes it harder than ever to tell who actually wrote the piece. Was it AI or a real person? Most stories now rely heavily on press releases or recycled content, and smaller outlets that used to do real digging have either shut down or gone behind paywalls.

Toiletries

You may have noticed that your favorite shampoo just doesn’t feel the same anymore, and that’s because companies keep “reformulating.” This often means watering it down or swapping in cheaper ingredients, while bottles are smaller too, so you end up using it up faster. The shelf life also seems shorter, even though you’re paying the same price.

What’s something you used to trust that now feels disappointing?
