It’s 2025 and that means a lot of career advice is outdated. The workplace has changed & so have the ways we approach our careers. Honestly, the idea we should stick to one job for life or that we “need” a traditional college degree was outdated even back in the day! Let’s look at some bad career advice and why it’s no longer relevant in 2025.

Stick to One Career Path

Sticking to one job used to be the norm but not anymore. These days, it’s better to work in different roles & industries because it shows you’re flexible—you’re not afraid of a challenge. Plus, you’ll get to learn a bunch of new skills along the way that you can transfer to different industries.
Always Have a Five-Year Plan

In theory, having a rigid five-year plan for your career is a good strategy. But in practice? It’s quite restrictive. The truth is that the job market doesn’t care about your plan & it changes with the wind. New industries pop up & old ones fade away – you have to be flexible enough to deal with these changes. You should be ready to adapt when opportunities come knocking.

Prioritize Job Security Over Everything

Rather than seeing job security as the holy grail of career goals, most people would rather have joy in what they do & the freedom to live their lives on their terms. Now that gig work and freelancing are more popular, many of us understand there’s more to work than a steady paycheck. It’s 2025—time to explore and find what truly fulfills you.
A Traditional College Degree is a Must

You don’t need a college degree to make it in life anymore. After all, we have the Internet at our fingertips so you can master almost anything from anywhere through online courses & intensive boot camps. Even YouTube tutorials can give you the kinds of expertise that were unimaginable just a decade ago.
Keep Your Resume to One Page

The old one-page resume rule is out. Of course, you don’t need to write a novel but you also don’t want to sell yourself short. Platforms like LinkedIn give you a chance to show a fuller picture of your career by showing off any important projects & sharing your successes. Rather than squeezing your career into a tiny box, you need to make an impact.
Only Apply for Jobs You’re Fully Qualified For

Job hunting is always intimidating and especially when you’re looking at a list of requirements that feels a mile long. However, most employers know that the “perfect candidate” doesn’t exist—instead, they want people who are eager & willing to learn. Even if you don’t meet every requirement, you should still apply for any interesting jobs. Make a case for why you’re a great fit.
Follow Your Passion and the Money Will Come

One of the most common pieces of advice is to “follow your passion”—but passion alone won’t pay the bills. Instead, you need to figure out the balance between what you love & what can sustain you. It’s okay to follow your dreams as long as you’re smart about how you do this. Don’t leave your goals to chance.
A Promotion Will Come Eventually

Waiting around for a promotion to land in your lap is old school. These days, you need to take the reins to move up and start by identifying where you want to go. Next, map out how you’re going to get there—like taking on new projects or learning new skills. Even starting a side project is important because it shows initiative.
Be a “Yes” Person

Saying “yes” to every task or project that comes your way will only ever lead to burnout. In 2025, your goal should be to set healthy boundaries & know when to say “no” or “not right now.” You can still be a team player—you just need to manage your energy and time more efficiently. Employers actually respect when you can do this!
Your Social Media Account Isn’t Important

A strong social media presence is now as important as a good CV. Many employers look at candidates’ online profiles to get a sense of their personality & interests, as well as how they present themselves to the world. But don’t worry—you don’t have to be an influencer! Just make sure you have a professional LinkedIn profile to show your skills.
You Need to Fit In

Companies need a strong brand—and so do you. Personal branding involves how you present yourself & your work to the world and it’s what makes you memorable. Since the job market is so crowded, you need to find a way to set yourself apart instead of being like everyone else. This could involve how you communicate on professional platforms or the projects you show in your portfolio.
