10 Old-School Pet Names You Never Hear Anymore

Here’s a little stroll down memory lane with some old-school pet names I came across that are totally worth a second look. These names have that classic ’70s vibe—some are cute, some a little quirky but they give you that sense of nostalgia when you remember that one precious pet you knew as a kid. You’ll notice that many of these names pretty much give away the pet just by hearing them.

This is a classic dog name. Whether you’re discussing your own dog or some well-known dog in a story, Fido is a very common name in English you used to hear everywhere. If you haven’t ever owned a dog yourself, you might have pictured in your mind a small Fido sitting by the door ready to welcome your return. It fell out of favor but still makes the heart go ‘ahh’ when you think of it.

I mean, if a cat doesn’t deserve to be called Mittens, who does? “Mittens” sounds like the sort of name you spontaneously bestow on the kitten you spot curled up sleeping in a lawn chair at a garden party — the kind of cat that is portrayed leaning peacefully against cushions in story books and oil paintings.

Buddy was once the go-to name for male parrots, and it’s easy to see why. Parrots are incredibly expressive, vocal birds, from African greys to cockatoos, known for their mimicking skills and lively personalities. Owning a parrot isn’t like having any old pet—it’s like gaining a friend who chats right back at you.

As well as for canines, ‘Spike’ was also for turtles! How amusing to imagine a little turtle named Spike, moving oh so slowly around the house, acting tough because of its name, while really being one of the gentlest creatures on Earth.

A rabbit is a soft, downy animal, and therefore this is a perfect name for them – the most adorable of creatures. With their little hops and twitchy noses, rabbits named Fluffy were practically made for backyard playtime and cozy moments that bring back the warmth of childhood memories.

Rex

A big dog named Rex had a powerful presence—you could picture him proudly marching across the yard with a noble air. Rex was a name with a touch of royalty, and many people loved it for their dogs.

This name was perfect for cats with mixed colors and patterns. It celebrated their patchwork quilt of colors and allowed a person to talk about the pet’s individual markings. It wasn’t personal to the pet but alluded to the way we have come to love them for their idiosyncratic ways and personalities.

Cuddles

Sweet and soft, Cuddles was the perfect name for a guinea pig. These little squeaky companions are gentle and affectionate, always eager for a cuddle and some love. Cuddles is a name that just fits their friendly nature, bringing back memories of soft little squeaks and the warm joy they bring to a household.

Champ

That’s perfect for a strong, winning and proud dog. It’s like the name for the winner, the best dog in the class. The star of the show. No matter what, a Champ would be the biggest star of the dog park.

Tweety

Directly inspired by the well-known cartoon bird, the name Tweety was used for birds similar in size to the character, like canaries. It suggested their sweet chirping sounds. The image this name brings is of little birds flying around the house cheerfully, causing laughter and amusement.
