10 Old Boomer Habits That Are Making A Comeback

It’s funny how some habits that appeared ancient once have become hip again. I feel like most of what Boomers did that the younger generations used to consider obsolete is now a thing. Perhaps it is because life is too fast & everyone is looking for easier, less busy ways of living. Or maybe some of these behaviors never were bad habits in the first place — they just needed to be rediscovered.

Today, let’s take a closer look at 10 such Boomer practices that are making a remarkable comeback.

Boomers used to save money clipping coupons from newspapers & magazines, and it’s coming back. Though most discounts are digital now, there’s also a huge number of people jumping into couponing apps & loyalty programs. Young people love saving a few bucks on grocery bills, dining out, or anything — just as Boomers once did.

The Boomers did a lot of thrift shopping, and it’s back in fashion — in part because of environmental concerns & the desire for collectibles. Vintage clothes, furniture, decor — this time people want to save money by avoiding fast fashion & mass production.

For many health-conscious young people, fast food & packaged foods are no longer a temptation. Boomers cooked family meals from scratch, and this practice is being brought back to life because it’s healthy & affordable. Young people are teaching themselves to make bread, can vegetables & cook with fresh ingredients.

Knitting and Sewing

Boomers used to knit & sew their own clothes & accessories, and this craft is resurfacing. It speaks to younger generations of people who are attracted by slow & thoughtful practices — and are looking to add an element of style to their wardrobes or make eco-friendly fashion choices.

Joining Clubs and Social Groups

In the days before the internet, Boomers went out into local groups or clubs to meet people & socialize. Today, young people are returning to the love of connecting in person — through book clubs, craft clubs & athletic teams. It’s also a great way to network while escaping screens.

Food was canned, pickled & fermented in Boomer homes — and they’re back in style. We all like to save our seasonal produce for the long run so that they won’t be wasted. And making your own jams & pickles is always fun and satisfying.

Boomers adored potluck dinners, in which everyone brought a dish to share — this tradition is making a great comeback. It’s a cheap way to meet friends & family while eating all kinds of homemade foods.

Though digital news is all the rage, some of us still find joy in the physical newspaper. The way boomers woke up with coffee & the newspaper is nostalgic. A newspaper is less distracting & more conscious than the thousands of headlines you can read on your smartphone.
