The Devil’s Tramping Ground, North Carolina

There’s a perfect circle in the woods near Siler City and nothing grows in it. According to legend, this barren spot is where the devil comes to pace in circles, plotting his evil deeds—animals also refuse to enter the circle & items left there overnight mysteriously move outside by morning. Such unexplained phenomena have made it a scary place for locals and visitors who dare to go near.
Lake Lanier, Georgia

Lake Lanier may be a popular spot for boating & swimming but it also has its fair share of eerie tales. It was created in the 1950s by flooding communities (including cemeteries) and the lake covers displaced graves & forgotten towns—over the years, a high number of unexplained accidents and drownings have happened. Some say the restless spirits from beneath the lake’s surface are to blame so you had better watch out if you ever visit!
Roanoke Island, North Carolina

In 1590, over 100 settlers vanished without a trace from Roanoke Island, leaving behind only the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post and plenty of theories about their fate. These include disease & native attacks but no one knows for sure, and the island’s history makes some people think it’s cursed. Whatever happened, the site continues to intrigue historians & visitors alike!
The Myrtles Plantation, Louisiana

The Myrtles Plantation was built in 1796 in St. Francisville and it’s steeped in ghost stories & legends—it’s rumored to be the site of at least ten murders. One famous tale involves Chloe, a former slave who was allegedly hanged after poisoning the family and visitors report seeing her ghost. There are also stories of many other ghostly sightings, strange noises & phantom footsteps.
The Lemp Mansion, Missouri

The Lemp Mansion in St. Louis has quite a tragic past that includes multiple family suicides & financial troubles, with some people saying the building still holds the unsettled energy left behind by those events. Doors lock on their own and disembodied voices sometimes echo in empty hallways—overnight guests have also talked about lights turning on & off without explanation. As such, the mansion has a reputation for unsettling encounters that keep ghost hunters interested.
The Winchester Mystery House, California

The Winchester Mystery House is a strange mansion in San Jose that was built by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. She was haunted by guilt & spirits of those killed by the rifles and believed continuous construction would appease them—for 38 years, work went on nonstop. It created a maze of over 160 rooms, secret passages, stairs leading to nowhere and doors that open into walls, with rumors that it’s haunted by ghosts still searching for peace.
The Bell Witch Cave, Tennessee

In the quiet town of Adams lies the Bell Witch Cave, which is tied to one of America’s most famous hauntings from the early 1800s. The story goes that a malevolent spirit known as the Bell Witch tormented the Bell family and they blamed her mysterious noises, physical attacks—and even the death of John Bell. People who visit the cave now report hearing strange sounds and seeing apparitions, as well as an overwhelming feeling of unease.
The Stanley Hotel, Colorado

The Stanley Hotel is famous for inspiring Stephen King’s “The Shining” and there are good reasons for that—guests & staff have reported ghostly encounters, including apparitions of children laughing in the halls. Bodie Ghost Town, California

Bodie is an abandoned gold-mining town near the Nevada border, now preserved as a State Historic Park.
