I’m Over 60, and These 12 Trends Are Just a Waste of Money

Now I’m 63 and whenever I spot the latest trends, I always wonder — are they worth all the hype? With all those years of heavy shopping and overspending, I know very well that most of the products advertised as “must-haves” really aren’t worth the money. At this point in life, it’s easier to recognize what’s really worth the money versus what’s whimsy. In this list, I am going to share with you 12 such trends I feel you should skip – if you don’t want to waste your savings.

Exotic Superfoods

You see, each year, a “miracle” superfood comes out—acai, quinoa, chia seeds—and it’s expensive. They are good for you, but not better than cheaper oats, beans, or seasonal fruit. Now I try to limit myself to simple, nutritious food because that way I can ensure that my meals remain both delicious and economical.

Fast Fashion

Fashionable clothes that are no good after a few washes are a pure waste of money. Sure, they’re cheap at the start, but replacing them keeps costing more in the long run. I’d rather have timeless, good-fitting pieces that stay put for years. This helps me save some bucks and spares me from having to deal with the frustration of throwing out clothes that didn’t hold up.

Pet Accessories

Designer clothes, fancy kitty furniture and pet treats get more and more vogue, but most of them aren’t a necessity. Pets love to be loved — they need attention and nothing more than a comfortable bed or chew toy. If you buy things they don’t really need, it means you are wasting your money.

Overpriced Coffee

It’s insane how much we spend on a good cup of coffee every day. $5–$10 a day for a latte costs you hundreds of dollars every month and you can invest in something better. Making my own coffee at home is not only cheaper but also I get to choose and control the flavor.

Subscription Boxes

Subscription boxes seem fun at first—who doesn’t like surprises? But after a few months, they start to pile up. Whether it’s beauty products I won’t use, snacks I don’t love, or trendy clothes that don’t suit me, they are mostly junk.

Trendy Kitchen Gadgets

Avocado slicers to milk frothers: single-use kitchen appliances look pretty good but are rarely used. They clutter up the drawers and hardly ever sell. A sharp knife & a few multipurpose tools will do most of the kitchen work for you, saving you money and space.

Luxury Gym Memberships

Fitness is good but you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on gyms with spas, juice bars, and the like. Those things don’t get used that much anyway. A walk in the open air or a home exercise routine is just as effective for staying healthy & they cost almost nothing.

Meal Delivery Services

Meal kits sound convenient, but they’re hardly cheap. Not only do the dishes take up space in the fridge, but they often also include packaging waste and smaller portions. I’ve also discovered that buying fresh ingredients & making meals myself is cheaper, healthier and more enjoyable. Plus, I can customize the food to my liking, instead of putting it into someone else’s cookbook.

Expensive Tech Upgrades

When ads are so cool, we want the newest smartphone or tablet. Yet, in practice, all these models are typically quite similar. All my older phones are great for calls, taking photos & browsing. To spend hundreds — thousands — of dollars on something that’s slightly more useful is just plain waste of money.

Costly Beauty Treatments

Chic facials, anti-wrinkle creams & expensive creams can promise miracles, but seldom do they work as promised. I’ve found that a basic skincare routine with budget products does the same. I prefer to age naturally & gracefully rather than trying to be flawless with expensive chemicals.

Over-the-Top Home Décor Trends

Home decor trends are probably the fastest shifting nowadays and the influencers are out with new releases every season. Re-doing home decor every couple of years to keep up isn’t only exhausting but costly. Classic furniture and decor, reflecting my own personality is more my style now.

Expensive Travel Trends

Luxury cruises, five-star hotels, and exotic getaways promise an ode to the ultimate travel experience, but they cost way too much. Some of my favorite visits have been simple vacations to local spots or visiting family. For me, memories matter more than the price tag.

Social Media-Inspired Purchases

Social media scrolling is bad for your wallet. Everything looks so good in ads and on Instagram, from phones to clothes to furniture. But the majority of these are impulse buys and are useless. I would now double-check before I buy anything if it’s on trend online.
