12 foods you may have been eating wrong

Food doesn’t come with a rulebook, and most of the time, you just eat it. However, some stuff we eat completely backwards without even realizing it, mostly because it’s not all that obvious. Here are twelve foods that you’ve probably been eating wrong all this time. Which of these surprised you the most?

Avocados

Most people think you should scoop out an avocado’s innards with a spoon, and that makes sense most of the time. But then you realize you’re leaving the creamiest part near the skin. A good trick is to cut the avocado into quarters & peel the skin off, without scraping. Doing so helps you avoid any weird spoon marks, too. Easy-peasy.

Pomegranates

You should really stop tearing open pomegranates like they’re clementines. Why? Because that’s how you end up covered in juice & nastiness that nobody really wants. Try scoring the skin with a knife and cracking the fruit open in a bowl of water. This causes the seeds to sink & the white parts to float, so you can easily separate them. What could be better?

Kiwis

There’s really no reason to keep peeling kiwis because that fuzzy coat is entirely edible. Sure, it feels a little weird to eat it at first. But the skin has a lot of fiber in it, and all you need to do is rinse it off & bite into it, like you would an apple. Eating it will also help you cut down on unnecessary food waste, so really, there’s no downside to trying this.

Garlic

Some people think they need to crush garlic early while they’re prepping everything, yet that’s not a good idea. Doing so actually kills the flavor, as the allicin starts to disappear once you crush it. That’s what gives garlic its taste. As such, it’s better to wait to crush it until right before it goes into the pan to give your food the strongest flavor possible.

Strawberries

Whenever you slice off the whole top of the strawberry, you’re throwing away the best bit. Instead, try stabbing a straw through the bottom & popping off the leafy bit. It’s a lot cleaner this way. Best of all, you’ll reduce the amount of food waste and feel rather proud of yourself, too. What’s not to love?

Bell peppers

Cutting a bell pepper down the middle seems like the right way to go, at least at first. But doing this often causes the seeds to fly everywhere. There’s a much cleaner way, which involves cutting off the top & bottom. Then, pull out the middle part. Slice the sides & you’re done, without any messiness. It’s as simple as that.

Peanut butter

Anyone who likes eating natural peanut butter knows just how annoying that layer of oil is on the top. Thankfully, there’s a fix for that, which involves storing the jar upside down the night before you use it. It’ll stir much more easily this way. Better yet, the butter won’t have a dry bottom & the lid won’t leak. Just make sure to shut it tight.

Hard-boiled eggs

It’s a lot harder to peel fresh hard-boiled eggs because the shell sticks to them relatively easily. To avoid this, try putting them in your fridge for a bit. It’ll make it much easier to peel the shell, which shows that old eggs sometimes are better eggs. At least for this.

Mangos

Peeling a mango before cutting it is a rookie mistake. Honestly, it’d probably be easier to wrestle a stick of butter, or at least try slicing both cheeks off the fruit. You should also score them while they’re still in the skin & flip them inside out. With this hack, you’ll get some nice cubes and save your hands some mushiness. It’ll taste just as good.

Cupcakes

How annoying is it when you eat a cupcake and the frosting smears on your nose? Thankfully, what you could try doing is twisting off the bottom part and putting it on top. You’ve made a cupcake sandwich. When you do this, you’ll have a bit of cake & frosting with every bite, without any sticky fingers. What a neat trick.

Oranges

Starting from the top of an orange and peeling it is a real pain. So, you should roll it on the counter first because this will loosen its skin, then slice it across the middle. It’ll be much easier for you to pop the slices out, and it doesn’t ruin your nails, either. It’s like magic, really.

Iceberg lettuce

Forget about using a knife because you’ll find it a lot easier to cut a head of iceberg lettuce using your hands. Yes, really. Take the head & hit the stem side down on the counter, and then the core will eject itself. You’ll have a clean hole with whole leaves. And honestly, it also feels pretty satisfying, too.
