Being Over 60 Changed How I See New Technology Trends

Let’s face it—technology is everywhere and it seems like every day there’s a new gadget promising to make life easier. But when you’re over 60, some gadgets are more hassle than they’re worth and especially if they don’t fit your lifestyle. Here are ten tech trends that aren’t as useful for those of us in the senior bracket. Whether it’s the cost, learning curve, or just plain impracticality – these trends aren’t my cup of tea!

Virtual Reality Headsets

Virtual reality sounds exciting on paper since you just put on a headset to be transported to another world. Sounds cool, right? But if you’re over 60, wearing one of these can feel like strapping a small TV to your face. They’re heavy & difficult to use. Plus, if you’re prone to motion sickness, VR might just turn a fun game into a not-so-fun afternoon.

Cryptocurrency Investments

Investing in cryptocurrency is all the rage these days and you hear stories about people making a fortune overnight. However, the reality is that it’s a highly volatile market with dramatic ups & downs. For those of us enjoying our retirement, it’s better to stick to more stable investments. At least then, you’ll know what you’re getting.

Fitness Trackers

These little gadgets track everything from your steps to your heartbeat, which is great for staying active. But the tiny screens & constant alerts can be rather annoying—is there any point in a device that tells you you’ve walked around the grocery store? As an older person, a regular routine without constant digital reminders suits me just fine.

Smart Home Assistants

The future is here—you can talk to a device that can control your lights, play music, or tell you the weather. However, the catch is that these devices are always listening. If you’re not keen on having a gadget that could eavesdrop on your every word, this might not be the tech for you. Just setting them up & keeping them secure is too much hassle.

Meal Delivery Apps

Meal delivery apps are a blessing when you don’t feel like cooking because they’ll deliver food right to your door. But honestly—those fees add up! Even working through a sea of restaurant choices on a small phone screen is just not worth the hassle, which is why I prefer the simplicity of traditional dining. Regular takeaway options are a lot better since they don’t have extra tech fuss.

High-End Smartphones

Every new smartphone model seems to promise the moon, yet they’re not giving it away. These phones are expensive! And many of their fanciest features are often overkill since people my age just need a phone to keep in touch with family and manage a few apps. Do you really need edge-to-edge screens & multiple cameras? Didn’t think so.

Electric Scooters

While going around town on an electric scooter can look like fun, they can be pretty dangerous, especially on busy city streets. You need a lot of balance & quick reflexes to safely operate these scooters. That’s a bit too much for seniors like me. Instead, it’s far safer (and less stressful) to stick to more traditional modes of transportation.

Subscription Streaming Services

Sure, it’s tempting to subscribe to every streaming service out there to catch all your favorite shows. But before you know it, you’re paying more than a premium cable package just to watch TV! Managing all those subscriptions and figuring out where to watch a particular film is a pain—so keep it simple with cable.

Social Media Platforms

New social media platforms emerge all the time, each with its own rules & setups. It’s exhausting! For a lot of us, staying in touch with family & friends doesn’t need to be complicated and we’d rather use one platform we know well. Better yet, emails and phone calls can keep us connected without the stress.

3D Printers

3D printers are certainly fascinating. Why? Because they can create everything from toys to tools right on your countertop. But the truth is, they’re not the easiest gadgets to use. Setting up the printer and learning the software takes a lot of time—then you have to maintain everything, too. For most casual users like me, the novelty isn’t worth the effort & cost.
