6 lost rituals once used to summon guardian angels

People used to lock themselves away for months and sleep beside sacred symbols hundreds of years ago, all because they believed they’d contact their guardian.

The Abramelin operation was a lot of work. You had to basically rearrange your entire life for either six or eighteen months, depending on which version you followed. The idea was that you had to stay morally ‘clean.’ You’d pray several times a day and work inside a special room.

It was called an oratory. Some believers actually took it one step further by wearing some special linen clothing during the whole process. The idea was simple. Put in enough effort, and your Holy Guardian Angel would appear and talk directly to you.

The Ars Paulina ritual was a little different from the older angel rituals. It was more connected to your zodiac sign. Yes, you had to work out the exact zodiac degree rising when you were born, then search tables with angel names. These names were linked to the position.

It was a lot more like astrology than some other ideas about guardian angels. To summon yours, you had to speak an invocation and time your ceremony carefully. But you had to be careful. Do the calculations wrong, and you could accidentally contact the wrong spiritual being.

The Ars Notoria ritual was famous in medieval Europe. Why? Because it promised people knowledge without having to put in years of grinding study. Everyone tried. Students, monks, even scholars copied the rituals, hoping their guardian angels would teach them something.

They would speak complicated prayers. They would draw symbols called notae. Some practitioners also slept beside the figures they’d created, instead of praying over them. They were that desperate for more knowledge.

A lot of older rituals were pretty complicated. Too complicated. That’s where the Ars Brevis ritual came in, kind of as a way of simplifying the process but achieving the same goal. You had to pray over sacred figures still. You also had to prepare them before sleeping.

But the whole process was way easier and shorter than the other ones. Believers thought a personal guiding spirit, also known as a tutelary angel, would appear in your dreams. They’d give you hidden knowledge.

The Bornless Rite began in the Greek magical papyri as a way to address a mysterious ‘Headless One.’ Later, ceremonial magicians made it into a ritual. They wanted to contact the Holy Guardian Angel.

It was also kind of repetitive and dramatic, although that was all on purpose. You had to recite a long list of divine names while you were standing in the prepared ritual space. You also had to sound confident. Sounding hesitant or fearful meant it wouldn’t work.

Other Ars Brevis dream rites kept changing throughout the centuries. There are some manuscripts that made it part of the Ars Notoria rituals. There are others that made it a separate thing. Essentially, someone practicing it in one century would do it differently in another.

But the idea itself was the same. You had to pray correctly. You had to prepare the sacred figures. You’d then sleep near them and hope that a guardian angel would appear before morning came.
