Someone who really cares about you will show it through the things they say, and their words prove they’ve been paying attention to you in a very special way.
They notice when something is off

Hearing someone say, ‘You don’t seem like yourself lately’ does feel a little weird because you might not even know what they mean. You might feel totally yourself. But the thing is, someone who’s close to you will know when you’re normal, perhaps even better than you know.
They know how quickly you usually text back and how talkative you are. They’ll pick up on clues that something’s up. In other words, only someone who genuinely watches out for you is going to spot a change before you’ve actually recognized there is one.
The celebration comes with a question

It always feels good to be congratulated for a good piece of work. But what makes caring people different is the fact that they’ll say something like, ‘I’m proud of you, but are you happy?’ They see your achievements, and they want to make sure you’re okay with them.
They don’t simply expect you to be happy with the job that has longer hours or the house that’s more expensive. They refuse to simply clap because you succeeded on paper. No, they care so much about you that they want to make sure the person inside all that success is doing okay.
There’s still an exit

A lot of people get weirdly attached to decisions once they’ve said them out loud. That makes it way harder to change them later. Yet people who care about you are willing to give you space to change your mind. They’ll say, ‘You can change your mind.’
This sort of saying comes from someone who isn’t interested in trying to be proven right, but rather, they want you to be happy. Caring sometimes involves giving someone the grace to reverse course. It’s sad how rare that actually is.
The first answer isn’t always enough

So many conversations end with one person saying, ‘I’m fine,’ and yes, sometimes they actually feel that way. Sometimes they don’t. A person who knows you well is going to hear it, wait a little, and then come back with, ‘I know you said you’re fine, but I’m asking again.’
They really want to check that everything’s fine with you. They didn’t have to, they could’ve just brushed the whole thing off and listened to you, but no. They’re determined to check that everything’s okay, and that matters.
They interrupt the self-criticism

Whenever you make a mistake, it’s normal to feel guilty afterward, but some people take it too far. They miss a single deadline and then tell themselves that they’re useless. They put on weight and say that they look awful. People who care refuse to let that happen.
Yes, they’ll say, ‘You need to stop being so hard on yourself’ because they don’t want you to be so negative toward yourself. You might mistake it as them being tired of your complaining. But no, they just care about you and want you to see yourself in a better light.
They don’t decide for you

The question, ‘What do you need from me right now?’ is a lot more useful than it seems. Someone who’s asking it is letting you know that, actually, you don’t have to pretend to be okay. You don’t have to pick between specific options. They’re allowing you to decide whatever it is you want from them.
It could be that you need some advice, or it could be that you need someone to just listen. It doesn’t matter. The truth is, a person who genuinely cares doesn’t always assume they know which one it is, and they’d rather ask you first.
There’s already a backup plan

People who genuinely care about you know when something big’s coming up. So, they’ll tell you, ‘You can call me if it goes badly,’ and that’s really quite heartwarming. It’s such a nice thing to say.
No, they didn’t force you to explain how you’re feeling, and no, they didn’t assume that you’d bomb it. They’re just making themselves available in case there’s even a problem. There might not even be one. But the point is, they were willing to be the person on the other end if it didn’t go well.
The small basics get checked

One of the most ordinary questions is also one of the most powerful. It’s ‘Have you eaten?’ That sounds so ordinary, especially when you’re dealing with something huge, but that’s exactly why someone asks it.
They understand how stress and deadlines can make you forget about food. They also understand how important it is that you don’t do anything on an empty stomach, so they’ll ask. They care that much.
The offer gets specific

‘You can stay here if you need to’ is one of the sentences that you might not even think about. But you should. Someone who says that is someone who really cares about your well-being. They’re checking that you have an actual bed to sleep in, and an actual place to stay.
They’ve moved past the vague offers of sympathy. Now, there’s something far more concrete on the table, even though they might not have a perfect guest room for you to sleep in. They’re just making space for you in a very literal way.
Someone else hears the tone

We all know someone who makes a joke at our expense sometimes, and makes a cutting remark other times. It happens so often that we barely think about it. But then someone who cares about you brings it up and says, ‘I don’t like the way they talk to you.’
That’s such a kind thing for them to say. Essentially, they’re telling you how they’ve noticed the way someone else behaves towards you, and how they think you deserve to be treated much better than that. You’re not going to do that with someone you don’t care about.
No remains an option

It sounds so obvious being told, ‘You’re allowed to say no,’ because, yes, obviously you are. Yet it’s something that so many of us need reminding about. People who care are ready to do that. They know when you’re agreeing out of guilt or habit. They know when you’re afraid of looking difficult.
Rather than allowing you to lie and pretend like everything’s okay, they’ll make things clear. You’re allowed to refuse. It doesn’t matter that it could make things difficult, they’re fine with tolerating that. The most important thing, apparently, is you.
Your silence gets noticed

Someone who says, ‘You’ve been really quiet lately’ isn’t trying to call you out or make you feel bad. No, they just pay enough attention to know that something’s up. They can see how your behavior has changed, and they want to get to the bottom of it.
Perhaps there’s nothing wrong, and you’re just quiet for no reason. That’s perfectly fine. Still, it’s nice to know that they value the sound of your voice so much that they’re willing to talk about not hearing it.
