11 skills many people abandon after 50

Hitting 50 can be a bit of a reset button. Some things feel more important than ever, while others… well, you just stop caring about them. Even skills you once worked hard to master can suddenly seem like more effort than they’re worth. Speaking to a group of 50-plus-year-olds gave us a list of 11 things they no longer bother with.

Speed reading or skimming through texts

When they got older, they were less likely to try and rush through reading an article or book, and just wanted to enjoy it. Speed reading started to seem unappealing as they began to favor slow and deep reading. They no longer had a desire to just finish a book, and just wanted to absorb the ideas.

Mastering new tech gadgets

Even though they still used technology every day, they became less interested in every new tech or app. They didn’t care to learn every single function of something, and the constant updates to software started to annoy them. It seemed like a much simpler and better experience to just use the same tools over and over.

Complex party tricks or magic tricks

Activities like sleight of hand or card tricks or other flashy party entertainments weren’t as cool to them anymore. There was more emphasis on having real conversations instead of “wowing” people with a fake skillset.

Extreme multitasking

Being able to or wanting to do a bunch of things at once became less attractive. After 50 they did fewer things but did them well.

Keeping up with celebrity gossip

They became less interested in following every detail of celebrity lives. These stories became less relevant or important to them, and they started to look for more real connections and interesting stories in their own lives or in deeper cultural topics.

Desire to learn languages fast

The love of languages tended to drop after they had been living abroad for a while. That excitement to become fluent in a day almost vanished. Many reverted back to the old speed or chose one language they felt good at.

Fashion experimentation

Experimenting with bold, new and daring fashion trends was no longer that fun and exciting. Many moved towards more personal comfort and style that didn’t care about the trends, often preferring timeless, classic clothing.

Competitive video gaming

Competitive, fast-paced video gaming’s appeal often dropped. It required quick reflexes and intense focus, and many lost the desire to play in such high-stakes, competitive environments. Interest shifted towards more casual, relaxing, or social games instead.

Big networking events

The amount of energy they put into going to big networking or social events tapered off. They stopped spending their time “networking” and spent more time with smaller groups of friends, or people they trusted and liked to work with.

DIY home renovation skills

They started to feel less interest in doing complicated home projects. They had less energy for it, and more importantly less time. Most started to outsource more home projects rather than DIY them.

Home appliance repairs

Post 50, they stopped attempting to mend broken small appliances or gadgets by themselves. The level of patience and energy required to diagnose and fix things wasn’t worth the trouble. They called in an expert or simply bought a new one.
