Yes, it’s easy to forget paperwork. And then it’s too late. Unfortunately, some things don’t make noise when they run out, and instead, they just stop working. Here are eleven simple documents you should never let expire without renewal. Have any of these caught you off guard before?

U.S. passport renewal rules

Almost everyone knows that adult passports last ten years. However, airlines & border agents often want six months of cushion left before they’ll let you board. You’ll need Form DS-82 by mail or an in-person DS-11 when you’re getting close. Worse still, you’ll pay extra and face more stress by waiting until the last minute, and that’s seriously not worth the drama. Just complete the form.
Trusted traveler memberships

That’s not all for travel. Global Entry & TSA PreCheck make airport life easier, but those cards don’t last forever, as they’re good for just five years. The renewal process isn’t automatic either, because sometimes you’ll need another interview, sometimes just an online form. Allowing it to lapse could cause you issues. You really want that to happen?
Green card (Form I-551) renewal

Sure, permanent resident status doesn’t end. But the actual card in your wallet does, and most are valid for ten years. An expired card could confuse airlines or employers, regardless of whether your status is fine, and replacing one involves filing Form I-90. Don’t worry once you’ve applied because the receipt notice works as proof while the new one’s pending.
Employment authorization (EAD) dates

The EAD card is like your work permit, and it has an exact expiration date printed on it. Different categories have different timelines, but not all get automatic extensions when you reapply, so failing to file early enough could force you to stop working until the new card arrives. You should be very mindful of checking those dates because even the slightest of mistakes could cost you big time.
Notary public commission term

Notary commissions run out after a set number of years, four in many states. You might need a fresh bond or new training to renew them, perhaps even an oath filed with the county. Whatever you do, don’t use an expired stamp. This could void everything you notarize.
Pet license and rabies proof

Pets can’t remind you when their tag becomes outdated, and most cities require licenses tied directly to rabies vaccine records. These usually last one or three years. Should your dog get lost or there’s an incident, an expired tag will only complicate things, which is why you should get them renewed.
Auto insurance ID card dates

The auto insurance slip in your glove box, or the app on your phone, actually has an expiration date. Insurance companies send a fresh card every 6 or 12 months when the policy renews. However, many people forget to swap them out. That’s a problem because an old card won’t help at a traffic stop or during registration.
USPS PO Box term

PO boxes don’t run forever & are sold in short blocks, usually three, six, or twelve months. USPS will eventually close the box completely for failing to pay or update the details, but you can extend the term online or at the counter. Keep an eye on your billing info & address to make sure the renewal notice actually arrives at a place where you’ll see it.
Residential parking permit

Normally, neighborhood parking permits expire once a year, and cities often tie them to your address & plate. You’ll need paperwork like a utility bill or current registration to renew it. Sadly, when you forget, they can put enforcement tickets on your car just like anyone else’s.
Car seat safety inspection certificate

Anytime a child’s car seat is checked at a hospital or safety event, they issue a certificate saying it meets standards. But that paper isn’t forever. It usually carries an expiration date that schools & daycares may want a copy of. Unfortunately, so many parents find out theirs is out of date only when asked.
Vehicle emissions test report

Some states require emissions checks, and in those places, the printed or digital test report only counts for a set period. This is often connected to registration. Yes, the car may drive fine, but the DMV system won’t renew your plates until you have a current inspection. The fix is simple. You just have to visit an approved testing station & get a new pass slip.
