It’s a fact that crime happens everywhere. However, the truth is that, in some areas, it’s more likely than others, and that’s because these cities have serious crime problems that aren’t going away anytime soon. Here are ten of the most dangerous cities in America. Would you feel safe walking alone at night in any of these places?

St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis can’t seem to shake the title of having the highest murder rate per capita in the whole of America (1). It’s had this record for a while. In fact, the city has entire blocks where it’s not surprising to hear gunfire, and Northside in particular hears this a lot. Broad daylight doesn’t stop the sounds either. Good luck if you’re visiting.
Detroit, Michigan

In theory, calling 911 should bring some help quickly, but that’s not always true in Detroit. Some neighborhoods have to wait an hour (2). Of course, that’s not exactly good news when you’re scared out of your wits and someone’s breaking in. It’s because the entire system is stretched thin. Don’t expect any quick help. Or at all.
Memphis, Tennessee

There’s a serious carjacking issue in Memphis. Unfortunately, it’s only become worse over the years, as case numbers have practically exploded across the city (3). It doesn’t even matter if it’s a busy area. Criminals have been seen to pull people out of their cars at stoplights & parking lots, even in fast-food lines. Car crime’s everywhere.
Cleveland, Ohio

Some of the worst crimes in Cleveland happen right next to schools, such as shootings & robberies. Shootings are down year-on-year (4). However, it’s not happening fast enough. Many kids are forced to walk home past it all and avoid being hurt, while also pretending that it’s no big deal. But it is.
New Orleans, Louisiana

Honestly, it’s no secret that New Orleans has a lot of problems. But by far one of the biggest ones is the fact that over 55% of murders here never get solved (5). The police department’s staff numbers have fallen over the years, meaning that cases pile up. Many families start feeling like nothing’s going to get fixed. Because it won’t.
Oakland, California

All the glitz and glamor of California isn’t enough to save Oakland. The crime issues mostly center around violent crime, with 1273 crimes per 100,000 people (6). But this isn’t anything new. The city’s been fighting high violent crime rates since the 1980s, which have centered particularly in East & West Oakland areas. It’s awful.
Baltimore, Maryland

Anyone who’s walked through Baltimore might’ve noticed block after block of boarded-up homes. But they’re not exactly empty. Nope, criminals have intentionally torched thousands of these homes, and that has made arson one of the city’s biggest issues. There’s a 1 in 63 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime, which is very high.
Albuquerque, New Mexico

Really, the scariest part of living in Albuquerque is how quickly things can change. You could be living a normal life one minute, then find that you’re in the middle of a robbery in a Walmart the next. Stuff just happens. The crime rate is at 61 per 1000 residents (8). It’s enough to make people double-check their surroundings wherever they go. You just don’t know.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

You can’t simply avoid one bad block in Milwaukee & feel fine everywhere else. Why? Because crime is practically a part of daily life in every neighborhood here (9), no matter what you’re doing. It’s a place where being extra paranoid about your stuff could save your life. Seriously.
Little Rock, Arkansas

Like Milwaukee, there’s no real safe area in Little Rock, so you can’t simply stick to the “nice part” of town. There isn’t one. Crime is everywhere. It’s at 1,801 for every 100,000 residents (10). whether that’s fights or shootings, and you’re never truly free from it. You have to stay alert. At all times.
