Getting older has so many perks that so many people know, like wisdom & experience. But nobody talks about the benefits of gift-giving. Gone are the days of cluttering your space with the latest fads or things that I’ll never use because preferences for both giving and receiving change when you turn 60.
Let’s look at ten types of gifts that just don’t make the cut anymore and explain why they’ve dropped off my radar.
Trendy Gadgets
Back in the day, I cared a lot about getting the newest tech on the block but now those days are long gone. Instead, those gadgets usually end up gathering dust or becoming outdated faster than you can say “software update.”
I’d rather give or get genuinely useful gadgets that won’t be obsolete by next Christmas.
Perfumes and Colognes
As a young person, I was always excited to try the latest fragrance and I’d happily buy the latest scents. But over time, my nose has gotten a bit more sensitive to strong smells.
These days, I shy away from gifting perfumes & colognes. I’ve also let my family know I prefer gifts that don’t involve an assault on the senses; fit’s much nicer this way.
Complicated Board Games
Even though board games are certainly fun, the ones with a million rules and pieces the size of a crumb aren’t as enjoyable anymore.
Now, I prefer simpler games that don’t require a half-hour explanation of the rules because the goal of playing is to spend quality time with my loved ones. Flicking through a manual? That’s boring.
Heavy Hardback Books
While I still love a good read, lugging around heavy hardback books has become a hard pass. I’ve switched to e-books & audiobooks because they’re far lighter and easier to carry.
I also don’t need a new bookshelf every year. Cleaning is a lot easier, too, since I don’t need to move a mountain of books every time I do the dusting.
Decorative Knick-Knacks
There was a time when every surface in my house was covered with figurines and baubles because it made my home look personalized. But I’ve realized that keeping things simple & clutter-free is a lot better.
I prefer receiving gifts that actually have a function or at least don’t require me to dust them regularly. Less is definitely more.
High-Maintenance Plants
Even though I enjoy a bit of green in my home, I say “no thank you” to any plants that need more attention than my pets.
Instead, I prefer succulents or even faux plants; anything that looks nice but doesn’t need me to check on it every day. They also make great gifts for any friends who don’t want to be a gardener every day, too.
Fashion Jewelry
At one point in my life, I kept up with jewelry trends but these days, I care far more about timeless pieces. I’ve stopped giving and getting jewelry that’ll go out of style by next season.
So what are the gifts? Classic looks that never get old. They’re always good enough to pass down as keepsakes.
Workout Gear
Let’s get it straight, working out is important at any age, although buying the latest & greatest workout gear isn’t always so necessary.
These days, a walk around the block or some gentle yoga is more my speed, so I don’t need much in the way of sports attire. I much prefer gifts that fit my slightly more laid-back fitness routine.
Exotic Food Baskets
Who doesn’t love the thrill of giving or receiving an exotic food basket? However, as my diet has become focused on health and comfort over adventure, I’ve found that simpler foods do the trick.
Even sticking to familiar foods has made things easier on my digestion; and my shopping list.
Nightlife Vouchers
Gift cards for a night out on the town used to be a great gift. But these days, I value a quiet evening at home or a nice meal out over a loud bar or club since it’s a lot more comfortable.
I can have actual conversations now. So, I prefer gift vouchers for experiences that match my more relaxed lifestyle.
